David Crockett Monument
Dedicated to the memory of David Crockett and situated in the center of a sixty-acre city park, the David Crockett Memorial Building received additional funds from the City of Crockett, and the women’s clubs, who used the building as their meeting place. The balcony provided a public library and museum, sponsored by the affiliated women’s clubs. A plaque briefly outlines the life of David Crockett.
Crockett County Museum
The Crockett County Museum became a reality in 1939. It was located in the school until 1958 when it was moved to the Courthouse Annex. This historic building was originally the Methodist Church built in 1926 but burned in 1942. All that was left was the rock structure. It was then built into a hospital, which was there until 1956, when it became the Courthouse Annex. In 1998 the museum began restoration to occupy the three-story building.
Fort Lancaster State Historical Park
Spanning 82 acres in the Pecos River valley, Fort Lancaster State Historic Site commemorates the vestiges of one of four posts established in 1855 to protect the military route between San Antonio and El Paso. Visitors wander through ruins imagining the once-impressive establishment of 25 permanent buildings — including a blacksmith shop, hospital, sutler’s store and bakery — and enjoy the sights, sounds and wildlife of West Texas.
McDonald Observatory

Caverns of Sonora
The Caverns of Sonora is recognized as the most beautiful cave in Texas and one of the most beautiful show caves in the world. The Caverns of Sonora is located on Interstate 10, about half-way between Big Bend National Park and San Antonio Texas. We are located 15 miles southwest of Sonora, Texas and the Caverns is a great place for people of all ages to experience the wonders of nature.
Big Bend
Just a few hours drive from Crockett County is one of the United States most incredible National Parks, the Big Bend National Park. This area is rich with history and activities, which include: Fort Davis National Historic Site, McDonald Observatory, Museum of the Big Bend, Sul Ross State University (in Alpine), and the Chihuahuan Desert Visitor Center.
Seminole Canyon State Park Historic Site
This historical park is located less than two hours from Ozona, just a short distance from the confluence of the Rio Grande with the Pecos River. The canyon was probably named for the Seminole-Negro Army scouts stationed at Fort Clark. In the canyon is Fate Bell Shelter, which contains some of North America’s oldest pictographs believed to be painted as long as 4,000 years ago.
Del Rio
For the person into water sports, Lake Amistad (which means friendship in Spanish) boasts 100 square miles of surface water filled with millions of stripers and Florida bass, stocked by Fish and Game Department officials so that anglers are practically guaranteed a catch. Clear visibility and a great variety of depths make this a diver’s paradise that some call the finest scuba lake in Texas.
